Commentary In Pursuance Of Books Die kleine Hexe
- Hello Manny, do you recognize me?- No, who are you?
- Come on.
- No idea.
- I'm your subconscious.
- Oh... right. It's true, you did look familiar. Well, what've you been doing?
- Thinking about sex, mostly. Let me tell you my latest fantasy. There's--
- Subconscious, this is not an appropriate time! People are listening! Have you no sense of shame?
- No.
- Okay... I guess you wouldn't. So, uh, what else have you been doing? Read anything recently?
- Same as you, Manny, same as you.
- What did you think of Die kleine Hexe?
- What did you think of it, Manny?
- Oh, I don't know. It improved my German. I thought it was a bit girly, to be honest.
- But what did you think it was about?
- Nothing much. A cute story about a kind witch who decides to be different and go around helping people.
- Honestly, Manny. You really thought that was what it was about?
- Well, what else? And don't say sex.
- I wasn't going to.
- Alright, Subconscious, what's your theory then? Since you're obviously dying to tell me.
- It's about the Third Reich.
- Jesus Christ, Subby, every time we read a book in German you tell me it's about the Third Reich. You said the German translation of The Little Prince was about the Third Reich.
- But this one really is!
- Look, 45 people on Goodreads have reviewed this book, and not one of them has even hinted at connections with the Third Reich.
- Okay, let's walk you through it. The heroine of the book is a witch who lives with a raven called Abraxas. Now who is he?
- Her familiar?
- Yes, yes, but what does he represent? Think Pinocchio, Manny.
- Oh, er, right. Jiminy Cricket. The raven's always giving her moral advice. He's her conscience.
- Pretty slow today, Manny. And what happens when the witch takes her conscience's advice?
- Well... she gets in a lot of trouble. It turns out that in witch society you're supposed to be evil. So someone who acts morally is in fact a very bad witch.
- Now Manny, where and when was this book written?
- Germany, 1957.
- And had anything recently happened there that might remind you of the witch society?
- Ah... well... look, I see where you're going, but I don't buy it. Too much of a stretch.
- Have it your own way, Manny, have it your own way. I can show you the facts, but I can't make you believe them.
- Look, Subconscious, can we talk about something else?
- Absolutely! Let's get back to my fantasy. There's these two hot girls...

This is the book I learned reading with in school. Loved it!A nice kids book about overthrowing from within an oppressive system with cruel social norms. I do worry that now that die kleine Hexe is (spoiler alert) the last witch around, she may grow capricious and dictatorial. Hopefully the raven Abraxas keeps her just.
This is funny and relatable book to everyone because we all sometimes feel like we don't belong and sometimes everything that we do doesn't to seem make sense.

I bet many must have read this book when they were little, but surprise, surprise; this is the first time I've read this book. And guess what? I absolutely loved this book!! How could I have missed this book as a child? Why didn't my parents let me read this book? I am 100% sure my child self would have adored this book as much as I do now! This book follows the growth of the little Witch. In the beginning, she is belittled and underestimated by other big Witches for being so young (127 years
