The Same Old Story
I desire nothing, seek nothing but peace, the slumber of the soul... I turn to stone. In this trance anything can happen, I see neither others nor myself. I do nothing and do not notice the actions either of others or myself - and I am at peace, I am indifferent. There can be no happiness for me, and I will not succumb to unhappiness.Oh, for the love of Gutenberg, I need to find this.
What I admire in this novel: - excellent portrayal of class and the demoralizing effects of wealth- the damaging effects of the ideology of love- the no-win outcome for both sexes in a patriarchal marriage except, of course, that the husband gets to pursue his career, while the wife is bound What I wish were different: - often too heavily dialogue laden- the two male protagonists (nephew and uncle) are overdrawn, less would have been more and the aunt could have been used more efficiently as a

If having read a number of works by nineteenth century Russian authors of the first rank such as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, you feel a desire to acquaint yourself with those of the second rank, you may want to consider Goncharov who has the virtues of being available in English and who is good enough in places to keep you hoping as you read along that he will somehow rise to the first rank which ultimately he does not.I found the "Same Old Story" to be vastly superior to "Oblomov" which is much
Full of humor and great humanity, a tribute to the great coming of age novels of Balzac. This was a trip down memory lane for me, reliving the follies of youth, disillusionment, and finally acceptance of one's place in the grand scheme of things. I was thinking about this one lately and figured that it deserved five, not four stars as I gave it (because I felt like there was a great lack of metaphysical weight) when I originally read it (exactly three years ago on summer vacation). Great post-romanticism stuff. Liked it far better than the somewhat overhyped Oblomov. Most memorable character: main characters cynical uncle.
I loved it! Especially the cynical uncle.

Rendition In Pursuance Of Books The Same Old Story
The Same Old Story (1847) tells the story of Alexander Aduyev who leaves the idyllic setting of his home in the country to seek his fortune and make a career in St. Petersburg under the guidance and protection of his uncle, a government official. Such is the beginning of this "ordinary story". Alexander Aduyev, a "romantic three times over" (to quote Vissarion Belinsky) gradually sheds his idyllic notions and develops into a heartless and calculating climber.Describe Books In Favor Of The Same Old Story
