Representaion In Pursuance Of Books La suma de los días

Isabel Allende's books are treats I only indulge in occasionally because there are only so many of them and she's 74 (that worries me.) Still, I don't know why it took me so long to pick this up, it was released 10 years ago. It's wonderful, right up there with The House of the Spirits and Paula. We've had The Japanese Lover in fiction recently, but come on, Isabel, we need to know what happened after 2006. Another memoir, please? The author creates a beautiful story where she presents her family and how it evolved in time. The most amazing thing is how they manage to stay united and to navigate through life together, for better and for worse. For me, reading this book was a reminder that love, understanding and truth are the key ingredients for every family.
I enjoyed this book. As she is one of my favourite authors, it was a treat to be able to read about her writing process, her inspirations and motivations for her books and her life in general. It was filled with a mixture of funny, outrageous, warm and loving stories and came across as honest and interesting (though not gripping, like her novels). It wouldn't be easy to write about family and friends and get their permission to tell their stories in such an open (and characteristically dramatic)

Though this book contains very much sadness it is a fine read. Following the death of her daughter this is written as if to the child she misses most desperately. Although living in a tribe of her own making - with some colourful characters - Isabel Allende has many obstacles to her happiness.
I was surprised to find myself reading a memoir which reads like a women's magazine article (we have such magazine in Latin America, and I now think she writes the Tía Eulogia articles), not like the memoirs of a serious/acclaimed writer. I had read "Eva Luna" and "Cuentos de Eva Luna" before and had fallen in love with her powerful work... This book, unfortunately, lacks that character. It's like listening to my aunts telling stories about my family, which I know are 10% truth. It's all gossip.
The book is great so I give it 5 stars. She really knows how to write even her memoirs are entertaining like her novels. Allende uses a writing style of writing to her deceased daughter. After Paula's death, Isabel attended to Jennifer's care when she was a drug addict. Jennifer was addicted to drugs and now has constant septic infections due to dirty needles which the Filipino ER doc blamed the parents for. B/c of her parents divorce and self-absorbed affairs, Jennifer turned from a good girl
