I'm reading about Christian pastoral governance which is all about the renunciation of one's will, and one's obedience and subservience to your superiors, and ultimately, to God. And that's what this long poem is all about. Renounce your ego; renounce your will; abandon your desires; and be obedient to those that command you. Ultimately, be fully obedient to God.Now, there are some aspects of this I can get behind, but this poem's obsequious and lachrymose obsession with obedience bores the shit

Considered by Rumi to be “the master” of Sufi mystic poetry, Attar is best known for this epic poem, a magnificent allegorical tale about the soul’s search for meaning. He recounts the perilous journey of the world’s birds to the faraway peaks of Mount Qaf in search of the mysterious Simorgh, their king. Attar’s beguiling anecdotes and humor intermingle the sublime with the mundane, the spiritual with the worldly, while his poem models the soul’s escape from the mind’s rational embrace.Sholeh Wolpé re-creates for modern readers the beauty and timeless wisdom of the original Persian, in contemporary English verse and poetic prose.

I have the Penguin Classics translation of The Conference of the Birds on my to-read list but I heard about this adaptation via a recent episode of Get Booked, and decided to check it out. The focus here is very much on the gorgeous illustrations and aesthetic appeal - the pages are thick and some are textured, the colors are vivid, there are many visually pleasing patterns, etc. The words feel like an afterthought. Sis wanted the illustrations to tell Farid ud-Din Attar's original story.Rating: 4* of five The Publisher Says: In The Conference of the Birds Caldecott Honor-winning children's book author and illustrator Peter Sís breathes new life into this foundational Sufi poem, revealing its profound lessons.Sís's deeply felt adaptation tells the story of an epic flight of birds in search of the true king, Simorgh.
